Roof repairs, Northern Rivers

Leaks found at the source, repairs matched to your roof

Ricky Jenner Roofing repairs leaking, rusted and storm-damaged roofs on homes and businesses across the Northern Rivers. We trace each leak to where the water gets in, then fix it with flashing and roof plumbing work, new cappings, fixings or sheets matched to your roof.

Sometimes the roof is sound and the water comes from overflowing gutters and downpipes, so we check those too. If leaks keep coming back, we price roof replacement alongside the repair, and our guide to repair, restoration or replacement sets out the trade-offs. From Wollongbar we cover roof repairs in Alstonville and Wollongbar, roof repairs in Lismore, roof repairs in Ballina and roof repairs in Byron Bay. Planning ahead? Use our roof maintenance checklist, read about the best time of year for roof repairs, or book a repair.

Where roofs let the water in

  1. Flashings.
  2. Rust.
  3. Storms.

Flashings seal the joins where the roof meets a wall, chimney, skylight or vent pipe. When one cracks or lifts, water runs along the sheets and battens before it shows, so the ceiling stain is rarely under the hole.

Common causes of roof leaks

Near the coast, salt settles in sheet laps, around screw heads and on cut edges. Orange spots in a line are often swarf, the metal filings left when sheets were cut. Caught early, the sheets or fixings can be replaced before rust spreads.

Book a roof inspection

Summer gusts get under loose screws and lifted cappings. After a storm we make the roof safe and watertight first, then repair it properly once the weather clears.

Roof repair questions

Straight answers on leaks, cost, colour matching and insurance. Anything else, just call.

What is the most common roof repair?

Flashings, fixings and cappings. Most leaks start where the roof meets something else, such as a wall, chimney, skylight or vent pipe, or where screws have worked loose and ridge or hip cappings have lifted. Rust at sheet laps and cut edges comes next, especially close to the coast, where salt settles on the roof between showers.

How do you price a roof leak repair?

It depends on what is causing the leak, how much of the roof is affected, the height and pitch of the roof, and the materials needed to match it. Resealing a flashing costs far less than replacing rusted sheets. We inspect the roof first and give you a free, itemised written quote, so you can see the cost of each part before you decide.

Can you find a leak that only shows in heavy rain?

Yes, but it takes a look at the whole roof. Heavy rain finds weak points that light rain never reaches: water can back up at short sheet laps and low-pitch sections, blow in under flashings and cappings in strong wind, or overflow from gutters and box gutters into the eaves and ceiling. So we check the roof and the gutters together.

Should I repair or replace my roof?

Repair it if the problem is local and the rest of the roof is sound. Replacement makes more sense when rust has spread across many sheets, leaks keep appearing in new places or the roof is near the end of its life. We give you an honest, itemised comparison, and if a repair is the right call, that is what we recommend.

Can you match my existing roof colour and profile?

Yes. We match Colorbond colours and the profile of your existing sheets, whether corrugated, wide-rib or clip-lock, so repairs blend in rather than stand out. An older roof has weathered, so even the same colour can look slightly different beside new material at first. BlueScope says touch-up paint weathers differently and can look blotchy, so a badly scratched sheet is usually replaced.

Do you help with insurance claims?

Yes. After storm damage we can provide photos, a written description of the damage and an itemised repair quote for your insurer or their assessor. Whether the damage is covered depends on your policy, so speak to your insurer early, and before you authorise any building work, including emergency repairs. We are roofers, not insurance advisers.

Do you repair tiled roofs?

Call us to check what we can do for your roof. Cracked and slipped tiles, and the flashings around them, are common storm repairs, and new tiles have to match the ones already there. If tiles are failing across the whole roof, or it keeps leaking, we will also price a tile to metal conversion, so you can compare ongoing repairs with a new Colorbond roof.

What is the best time of year for roof repairs?

If your roof is leaking, the best time is now, because water damage to ceilings, insulation and wiring gets worse with every storm. For planned work, aim for the milder, more settled weeks of autumn and early spring, and get it done before the summer storms. The NSW SES says storm season runs from September to April.
