Roofing, Alstonville plateau

Local roofers for Alstonville and Wollongbar

Ricky Jenner Roofing is based in Wollongbar, so roofing in Alstonville, Wollongbar and on the farms around them is work on our own doorstep. We re-roof older homes, convert tiled roofs to Colorbond, fix leaks and replace gutters right across the plateau.

Short trips mean small jobs do not have to wait for a big one: a single leaking flashing, a lifted ridge capping or a downpipe that has come away from the wall. We quote those properly too, and tell you straight if the roof needs more. After a big blow, see storm damage repairs; before you buy, book one of our roof inspections.

What the plateau does to a roof

  1. Rain.
  2. Red soil.
  3. No salt.

The Alstonville research station averaged about 1,822 mm of rain a year, with March the wettest month at around 261 mm. Add leaf litter from the big trees and gutters block fast, so we size gutters and downpipes for heavy bursts.

Gutters and downpipes

The red volcanic soil that grows the plateau's macadamias also ends up on roofs and in gutters as dust and splash. BlueScope warns against soil and damp debris sitting against Colorbond steel, so gutters and the lowest sheets are worth keeping clear.

Signs of gutter damage

BlueScope recommends standard Colorbond steel for roofs more than 200 m from breaking surf. The plateau sits well over 10 km from the beach, so most homes up here do not need Colorbond Ultra.

Heading toward the coast? Roofing Ballina covers Lennox Head, East Ballina and Wardell. West of the plateau, roofing Lismore covers Goonellabah, Bexhill and Clunes. On a leafy block, gutter guards cut down the clearing. Every town we cover is on all service areas.

Sources: rainfall is from Bureau of Meteorology averages for Alstonville and Ballina Airport, and steel grades from BlueScope's roofing selection guide (TB-1A).

Where is Ricky Jenner Roofing based?

In Wollongbar, NSW 2477, on the Alstonville plateau. We're a service business, so we come to you rather than working from a shopfront. Alstonville is about 4 km from our base by road and Bexhill about 15 km, and Ballina and Lismore are each around 20 minutes away.

Do homes on the Alstonville plateau need Colorbond Ultra?

Usually not. BlueScope recommends standard Colorbond steel for roofs more than 200 m from breaking surf, and the plateau sits well over 10 km from the beach. Ultra is only worth discussing if there's an industrial source of fumes or fallout close to the house. We'll tell you which grade suits your site when we quote.

Can you replace the roof on a farm or orchard shed?

Yes. We re-roof and repair sheds as well as houses, including long-run roof sheets, flashings, gutters and downpipes. Bigger sheds can need a crane or boom lift to land the sheets, and we plan that into the job. Tell us the shed's rough size when you call and we can talk it through before we come out to measure.

Do you convert tile roofs to Colorbond in Alstonville and Wollongbar?

Yes. We remove the tiles, check the frame and battens, lay insulation blanket and fix new Colorbond sheets, flashings and gutters. The finished roof is far lighter than tiles and there's no ridge pointing to maintain, which suits the plateau's older brick and tile homes. The quote itemises each step, including any batten repairs.

Why do gutters on the plateau block up so quickly?

Mostly leaf litter from big trees, plus red soil and dust washed off the roof. Blocked gutters overflow in heavy rain and hold wet debris against the metal. Mesh gutter guards cut down how often they need clearing on leafy blocks, and if the gutters are rusted or undersized, replacing them is the lasting fix.

Do you cover the farms and rural roads around Alstonville?

Yes. We cover the farms and rural roads between Alstonville, Wollongbar and Bexhill as well as the town streets. Long driveways and sloping blocks are normal up here. When you call, tell us about access for scaffold and any crane, and we will plan the quote around it.

Do you roof apartment and strata buildings as well as houses?

Yes. Our plateau work includes a residential apartment building in Alstonville in 2023, alongside houses, new builds and sheds. Bigger buildings need more planning for access, scaffold and sometimes a crane. Re-cladding an apartment building is not exempt development under the NSW Codes SEPP, so check the approval pathway with Ballina Shire Council early.

Is the plateau wetter than the coast?

Slightly, on the Bureau of Meteorology long-term averages: about 1,822 mm a year at the Alstonville research station against about 1,782 mm at Ballina Airport, with March the wettest month at both. The bigger differences are the red soil, the trees and the exposed ridgelines, which change what a plateau roof has to handle.
