Gutter guards, Northern Rivers

Is gutter guard worth it? On a leafy block, yes

Ricky Jenner Roofing fits gutter guard to homes across the Northern Rivers. Under gum trees, palms or beside bushland, gutters fill with leaves between cleans and the outlets block in the first heavy rain. On an open block the benefit is small, and the money is often better spent on gutter replacement.

Guard keeps leaves out but adds no capacity, so a gutter that is too small or laid too flat still spills. If that is behind your overflowing gutters, we fix the gutter first. We fit guard from Wollongbar across the region, including gutter guards in Alstonville and Wollongbar, gutter guards in Ballina, gutter guards in Lismore and gutter guards in Byron Bay.

What gutter guard is up against

  1. Leaves.
  2. Downpours.
  3. Embers.

Leaf litter packs into gutters under gum trees and palms, holds water against the metal and blocks the outlets. Mesh guard keeps most of it on top, where wind and rain can move it on.

Signs of gutter damage

In a summer storm a gutter has to move a lot of water fast. Guard stops leaves blocking the outlets, but it adds no capacity, so an undersized gutter still spills. Check before the storms arrive.

Before storm season

On bush fire prone land, the NSW Rural Fire Service recommends metal gutter guards and says leaf guards should be non-combustible and installed to AS 3959. Tell us your bushfire attack level and we will confirm the product suits it.

Gutter guard questions

Straight answers on cost, products, overflows and bushfire areas. Anything else, just call.

Is gutter guard worth it?

It is worth it on blocks with overhanging trees or bushland nearby, where gutters fill with leaves between cleans and outlets block in the first heavy rain. On open blocks with little leaf drop, the benefit is small. Gutter guard reduces maintenance rather than ending it, so plan on an occasional check and hose-off of the mesh.

How much does gutter guard cost?

The price depends on how many metres of gutter are covered, the roof profile the mesh is fixed to, the height and access, and the condition of the gutters underneath. Guard is not worth fitting to rusted or sagging gutters, so we check them first. Ricky Jenner Roofing gives a free, itemised written quote after seeing the roof.

Which gutter guard is best in Australia?

There is no single best product for every roof. What matters is a durable metal mesh, holes fine enough for the leaves on your block, a fixing method that suits your roof profile, and non-combustible material if the block is bushfire-prone. We tell you which product we propose, and why, before you commit to anything.

Is gutter guard enough to stop an overflowing gutter?

Only if leaves are the cause. Gutter guard keeps debris out, but it does not add capacity, so a gutter that is too small for the roof, laid without enough fall or short on downpipes will still overflow in heavy rain. In that case the fix is new or resized gutters, and guard can then go on top.

Can you fit gutter guard to existing gutters?

Yes, as long as the existing gutters are sound. We check them for rust, sagging and leaking joins, then clear them out before the mesh goes on. If the gutters are close to the end of their life, it makes more sense to replace them and fit guard to the new gutters in the same visit.

Is gutter guard suitable in bushfire-prone areas?

It can help if the product is right. The NSW Rural Fire Service recommends metal gutter guards in bush fire areas and says leaf guards should be non-combustible and installed in accordance with AS 3959. Tell us your property's bushfire attack level when you ask for a quote, and we will confirm the product suits it.
