Storm repairs, Northern Rivers

Made safe first, then repaired properly

Ricky Jenner Roofing does emergency roof repairs on storm-damaged and leaking roofs across the Northern Rivers. After a storm we make the roof safe first, securing lifted sheets and cappings and stopping the water, then come back for permanent roof repairs once the weather allows.

Our hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm, and you can send the quote form at any time. Once the weather clears, a post-storm roof inspection finds damage that is not leaking yet, and our guide to why your roof is leaking helps if the water is still a mystery. From Wollongbar we cover storm repairs in Alstonville and Wollongbar, storm repairs in Lismore, storm damage repairs in Ballina and storm repairs in Byron Bay. Before the next storm, work through our storm season roof checklist.

Roof damaged or leaking right now?

Safety comes before the roof. These five steps protect your family, your home and your insurance claim until a roofer can get there.

  1. Stay off the roof

Wet metal and broken tiles are slippery, and storm-damaged sheets can shift underfoot. Leave it to someone with a harness and edge protection.

  2. Keep clear of power

If water is near light fittings, switch off at the switchboard only if you can reach it without standing in water. Stay 8 metres from fallen powerlines.

  3. Contain the water

Buckets under drips, towels along the walls, valuables moved clear. Keep out of any room where the ceiling sags or bulges.

  4. Photograph everything

The roof from the ground, the ceilings and anything damaged inside, before you clean up. Your insurer will want to see them.

  5. Call for help

In a storm, the NSW SES on 132 500 can help make your home safe. For the repair, call or send us the details and keep your photos ready.

Who to call

Emergency services first, then the repair. Our guide to the 5 things to do when disaster strikes covers each step in more detail.

Hail, wind and flood damage we see

  1. Wind.
  2. Hail.
  3. Floods.

Gusts get under loose screws and lifted laps, and each one peels a sheet or capping back a little further. Lifted sheets are refixed or replaced, and cappings screwed down or renewed.

Roof repairs and leaks

Hail and flying branches crack tiles, and one broken tile lets water straight into the roof space. Metal sheets can dent or scratch too, which is worth checking even if nothing leaks yet.

Post-storm roof inspection

Flood rain arrives faster than blocked or undersized gutters can carry it, so water spills back into the eaves and walls. Around Lismore we have helped families and businesses through storm and flood recovery.

What should I do if my roof is leaking in a storm?

Keep everyone safe and stay off the roof. Catch the water in buckets, move valuables clear and keep out of rooms where the ceiling sags. If water is near light fittings, switch off at the switchboard only if you can reach it without standing in water. Photograph the damage, then call the NSW SES on 132 500 or us during business hours.

Can you tarp my roof?

During a storm or after hours, the fastest help is the NSW SES on 132 500, whose volunteers put temporary tarps on storm-damaged roofs. Our job is making the roof safe and watertight during business hours and then repairing it properly. Tell us what has happened when you call and we will explain what we can do first.

Will my insurance cover storm damage to the roof?

It depends on your policy, so check it or ask your insurer. Sudden storm damage is often treated differently from a leak caused by wear and tear or poor maintenance, which may not be covered. The Insurance Council of Australia advises speaking to your insurer before you authorise any repairs. We are roofers, not insurance advisers.

Do you provide reports for insurance claims?

Yes. We can inspect the roof after storm damage and provide photos, a written description of what we found and an itemised quote for the repair, which you pass to your insurer or their assessor. Tell us when you book that it is for a claim, so the report covers what your insurer needs to see.

Can you repair hail damage?

Yes. Hail can crack tiles, dent or scratch metal sheets and cappings, and damage flashings and gutters. We check the whole roof, replace damaged sheets, cappings, flashings and gutters with colour-matched material and tell you plainly what needs fixing now and what can wait. Photos taken soon after the storm help if you are making an insurance claim.

Are you available after hours or on weekends?

Our hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm, and we are closed on weekends. If a storm damages your roof after hours, call the NSW SES on 132 500 for emergency help, or 000 if anyone is in danger. Then call us on the next working day to organise the permanent repair.

How quickly can you get to me?

We cannot promise a set arrival time, because one storm can damage many roofs across the region at the same time. Active leaks and storm damage are treated as priority work during business hours. Call 0415 525 982 with your suburb and what has happened, and we will tell you honestly when we can be there.
