Roof plumbing, Northern Rivers
What does a roof plumber do?
Ricky Jenner Roofing carries out roof plumbing on homes, sheds and commercial buildings across the Northern Rivers. A roof plumber looks after every part of a roof that moves water: the sheets, the flashings and cappings that seal its edges and joins, and the guttering and downpipes that carry the water away. Most leaks start at one of those: see the common causes of roof leaks.
The NSW Government describes roof plumbing as installing, repairing and maintaining gutters, downpipes, flashings and roof coverings, including skylights and ventilators, and licenses it separately from water plumbing, drainage and gasfitting. Our contractor licence 389777C carries the Roof Plumber class, and Ricky's licences are on the Verify NSW register.
- Flashings lapped to shed water, not smeared with sealant
- Box gutters graded to a sump, with a planned overflow
- Downpipes connected to the stormwater
Flashings and penetrations
Anything that passes through a roof or meets it at an angle needs a flashing that sheds water past the opening. We fit new flashings and re-flash old ones to suit the roof profile, rather than relying on sealant.
Already leaking? See our leak repairs around flashings. On a metal roof installation, the skylights, whirlybirds and vents are flashed in as the sheets go down.

Skylights
Lapped under the sheets above and over the sheets below.
Vents and whirlybirds
Pipe, flue and whirlybird flashings sized to the roof profile.
Chimneys
Apron and back flashings, where old sealant often lets go first.
Walls and parapets
Wall flashings where a roof meets a wall, cladding or a parapet.
Box gutters, valleys and downpipes
Box gutters and valleys collect water from two roof planes at once, so they carry more water than an eaves gutter and leave less room for error. Each needs a steady fall to a sump, an outlet big enough for the roof above and a planned overflow.
See commercial box gutters and box gutter overflow causes. We work from Wollongbar, including roof plumbing in Ballina, roof plumbing in Lismore and roof plumbing in Byron Bay, or you can talk to a roof plumber first.

What does a roof plumber do?
A roof plumber installs and repairs the parts of a roof that move water: metal roof sheets, flashings, cappings, gutters, box gutters, valleys and downpipes. In NSW the work also covers fitting skylights and ventilators. It is licensed separately from water plumbing, drainage and gasfitting, and it is where most roof leaks are found and fixed.
Do I need a licensed roof plumber for gutters and flashings?
In NSW, a contractor licence is needed for residential roof plumbing, including gutters, downpipes and flashings, when the job is worth more than $5,000 in labour and materials. Below that, a licensed roof plumber is still the safer choice, because a badly lapped flashing or a flat gutter can leak for months before you see damage inside.
Are you a licensed plumber as well?
Yes. Our NSW contractor licence 389777C covers the Plumber, Roof Plumber, Drainer and LP Gasfitter classes, and Ricky's own licence 219172C has covered plumbing and roof plumbing since 2009. You can check both, with their classes, on the NSW Government's Verify NSW register. Our day-to-day work is roofing, guttering and roof plumbing.
Can you fix leaks around skylights, vents and chimneys?
Yes. Leaks around a penetration usually come from a flashing that has lifted, sealant that has cracked, or a flashing that was never lapped to shed water past the opening. We find where the water is getting in, then re-flash or replace the flashing to suit the roof profile, rather than adding more sealant over the top.
Do you connect roofs to stormwater?
Yes. We connect new and replacement downpipes into the property's stormwater system, so roof water is carried away from the house instead of soaking the ground beside the slab. Our licence includes the Roof Plumber and Drainer classes. If you are replacing gutters at the same time, the downpipes and connections are planned as one job.
Do you do general plumbing?
Our licences include the Plumber, Drainer and LP Gasfitter classes, but Ricky Jenner Roofing is set up for roofs, gutters and roof plumbing, not general plumbing. If a problem involves the roof or the stormwater from it, such as a leaking vent pipe flashing or a blocked downpipe, call 0415 525 982 and we will talk it through.
